I have worked for Group One since 1998. Group One is a privately held proprietary trading firm which specializes in making markets in equity, index, and commodity options. I spent my first eleven years at the firm as a Trader and then five years as co-head of the firm’s Risk Management desk. I have been Group One’s CEO since 2014.
ACTIVITIES & INTERESTS
I enjoy spending time with my family, and try to help out as an assistant coach to kids’ sports whenever I can. I love to eat, travel, and read. I’m a huge football fan, both college (Michigan) and pro (Bears). Apart from that, I’m an avid golfer and paddle tennis player.
EXPERIENCE OR SKILLS THAT MAY BE USEFUL FOR BOARD COMMITTEES
I started my career in a mostly quantitative role, but as my career has progressed, I’ve become more and more engaged with people and their management. My job mostly boils down to helping solve problems, and making sure that the people are on board with the solution. A big part of that is making sure I listen to people, and understand their perspective on the issue at hand. I try to do so with a balanced approach, as it’s been my experience that a solution that tips the scales too far in one direction is probably not going to be in place for very long.
Managing within constraints is another big part of the job, and given Group One’s size (small to medium, relative to our competitors) our solution to a problem is rarely to throw money at it. We have to make choices, and at times we have to be creative.
One of the fun things about my job is that it forces me to wear a lot of hats, and I have to learn a little bit about of lot of things. I am not a lawyer or an accountant or a software engineer, but I know enough about those jobs to spot some problems, determine a priority, or establish a direction.
I serve on a handful of financial industry and exchange boards. There is a diversity of interests on those boards that is sometimes difficult to manage, and service in those organizations has taught me how to figure out what’s actionable and focus on that.
REASON FOR SEEKING TO SERVE ON BOARD
Our family has had an amazing experience at OLPH, and we couldn’t be happier with our choice to send our children to the school. The more time my family spends at OLPH, the more obvious it is that the whole experience is the product of the work of so many people, and I see volunteering for the Board as a way to do my part.
My goal in serving would be to aide OLPH’s administration in navigating the complexities of running a school. I feel my experience would be an asset to the Board; I often encounter many of the challenges I expect OLPH faces: managing constraints, spotting conflicts, forging a path with a balanced consideration to all stakeholders, etc.
The OLPH community has been everything that we hoped it would be, and the growth—academic, personal, spiritual—that our son and daughter have experienced has been phenomenal. I see service to the school as a way to ensure that OLPH continues to be a place where we want to send our children, and I want other families to see all the things that attracted us to OLPH as well
